Osmogine

Slide shows

Osmogine aims to bring together researchers, companies and other interested partners in a research and development consortium to design, build and study the first prototype of an osmotic engine.

These presentations introduce the scientific basis for this collaboration: the exact thermodynamic framework, the osmotic engine and its use as an osmometer, and potential applications of the Gibbs free energy of mixing.

Exact thermodynamic derivation of the Gibbs free energy of mixing of a solution

The thermodynamic basis for determining the Gibbs free energy of mixing through controlled osmosis.

The osmotic engine, OE

The osmotic engine has two distinct potential uses: as a precision osmometer or as a power-generating engine driven by pressure-retarded osmosis, PRO.

A central focus of the proposed collaboration is to develop and study a prototype that can test the engine’s use as an osmometer for determining the Gibbs free energy of mixing.

OE as an osmometer

Determination of osmotic pressure, equilibrium volume expansion and the Gibbs free energy of mixing through controlled osmosis.

OE as a power-generating PRO engine

The multicylinder osmotic engine used for the continuous conversion of free energy available from osmosis into mechanical work.

Applications of the Gibbs free energy of mixing

Examples of how knowledge of the Gibbs free energy of mixing can be applied to complex chemical and biological systems:
